Needle ArthroScope Technology

South Paws was lucky to acquire the BioVision 1.2mm NeedleView™ and Trice My-Eye™ needle scope systems. This is a breakthrough technology that offers diagnostic arthroscopic visualization in a scope that is only the size of an 18-gauge needle. This extremely small arthroscope allows us to quickly and efficiently diagnose those hard to treat injuries of the carpus, elbow, shoulder, hip, stifle, and tarsal joint. These systems are unique in that they typically do not require general anesthesia and can be performed under sedation. Not only does it help with a hard to make diagnosis, but it may also help your pet avoid unnecessary, invasive joint surgery.

“I am so excited by the introduction of this technology at South Paws. In human medicine, sports medicine doctors and orthopedists have already began taking advantage of the needle scope technology. South Paws is the gulf south’s leader in the treatment of small animal orthopedic and sports medicine injuries. We felt that it was only fitting that we have needle scope technology for our patients as well. Having access to all the major joints allows us to make an early, minimally invasive diagnosis. Those hard to diagnose injuries of the shoulder, such as bicipital tenosynovitis, supraspinatus tendinopathy, medial shoulder instability, or a hidden OCD lesion, can now be easily diagnosed and treated. It also allows us to evaluate a knee for a partial ACL or meniscal tear. In the elbow, the components of elbow dysplasia (FCP, OCD, UAP) can be visualized and then treated appropriately. In some instances, this diagnostic tool allows us to avoid more costly advanced imaging, such as CT or MRI, and allows us to get an accurate first look at the problem. By far, my favorite part is being able to use this technology without ever stepping into the operating room. Because of the portability and extremely small scope size, these needle scope procedures can be performed in the treatment room, under light sedation, avoiding the need for general anesthesia.
