Frequently Asked QuestionsSouth Paws Veterinary Specialists is the premiere surgical specialty hospital of Louisiana and the Gulf Coast. Our goal is to give your pet expert surgical solutions and provide them with the most comprehensive surgical care available in our area. Our practice's normal business hours are 8am-5pm Monday-Friday. We routinely see cases from all over the state of Louisiana, as well the Mississippi and Alabama Gulf coast.

Patient care/Visitation:

Dr. Robert Hancock is a Board Certified Surgical Specialist, as well as the owner and founder of South Paws. Our highly experienced staff will give your pet the care and compassion it deserves while in our hospital. Our patients are monitored 24 hours a day and a trained technician is always present to administer medications, provide pain control management, and perform general treatments for our patients. Your pet will be monitored at all times. In the event of an emergency or if any further diagnostics or treatments are necessary, we will notify you immediately, so please make sure we have accurate contact information on file. You can call to check on your pet from 9am until 5pm. We ask that you limit yourself to 2-3 calls per 24 hour period, due to the extensive case load. Phone calls after 5pm will be routed through our answering service; non-emergency calls may be returned the next business day. However, we will make it our priority to keep you informed of any changes in your pet's condition.

We also request that visitation not occur the same day as surgery, due to preoperative workups, recovery times, and the extensive monitoring necessary on procedure day. However, you are welcome to come and visit your pet while he/she is hospitalized during the remainder of their visit with us at South Paws Veterinary Specialists. Our visiting hours are 1pm - 4:30pm Monday through Friday. Please call ahead to reserve our visitation room, designed to make you and your pet as comfortable as possible. Visits can occasionally be scheduled on Saturdays; please call ahead for availability.


Before you leave your pet in our care, we will present you with a medical treatment plan for estimated services to be performed during your pet's stay in our hospital. This is only an estimate and is not a guarantee, but if any further diagnostics or treatments are required, we will update you and give you an estimate for these additional services. We require a 75% deposit of the upper end of the estimates to be paid prior to the procedure. The balance of your bill is due at discharge. We do not offer payment plans directly. However, we do offer third party payment plans and financing through Wells Fargo Health Advantage. Please inquire at the Front Desk if you are interested in our financing options; in most cases, it takes only a few minutes for approval. Wells Fargo can be applied for online in the comfort of your own home.


At the time of discharge we will provide you with discharge instructions concerning your pet's surgery and postoperative care (ex. medications, physical rehabilitation recommendations, confinement.) We will review these instructions with you and answer any questions you may have. This discharge will be sent to your family veterinarian so that they will be up to date on your pet's postoperative care as well. In addition, we will send a complete case summary referral letter to your veterinarian with all pertinent physical exam findings, diagnostics, and treatments. This ensures that we keep your veterinarian up to date and allows us to treat your pet with a truly integrated, team approach.
